Cloth Mouse Pad or Leather Mouse Pad: Which Suits Your Desk?

A cloth mouse pad gives you a softer feel and more control: the weave brakes the mouse so the cursor stops where you stop. A leather mouse pad (usually vegan leather) glides more smoothly and wipes clean, because spills sit on top instead of soaking in. If tea or coffee lives on your desk, pick leather. If your desk stays dry and you like a soft, grippy surface, pick cloth.

Most people buy a mouse pad once, from a photo, and then live with it for years. Here is what each surface is really like to use, including where ours lose.

Types of mouse pad: the 5 materials

Cloth over foam

The cloth mouse pad almost everyone has owned. The soft weave brakes the mouse nicely, which is why gamers who play at low sensitivity still like it. The catch is the foam: it squashes unevenly, the edge frays and any spill soaks right through. Most foam cloth pads last a couple of years.

Woven fabric (chambray)

The same fabric feel, but as a flat woven top with no foam inside. You keep the softer feel and the extra control, and the pad stays 1.3 mm flat, so it never gets a dent where your wrist sits. It is still fabric, so chai soaks in: you blot and spot-clean it, you do not wipe it. Our Ash Grey and Sage Green pads are this fabric mouse pad, at ₹599.

Vegan leather (PU)

The one most people end up happiest with for office work. It is smooth rather than slippery, so the cursor goes where you put it, and it is the only soft top here you can properly wipe. That makes it the closest thing to a waterproof mouse pad you can still rest your hand on. Our Royal Blue, Slate Charcoal and Stone Grey pads use it, at ₹499. Its weak point: a hard scrape from a ring or a watch buckle can mark the top, and that mark does not buff out.

Genuine leather

Ages beautifully and feels lovely, but it costs several times more, needs the odd bit of conditioner, and darkens where your palm rests. A nice thing to own, but not good value for money.

Hard plastic or glass (a hard mouse pad)

The fastest surface you can buy, which is why some competitive players use it. For everyday work it is a poor fit: it is loud, wears out the feet of your mouse, feels cold in winter and sticky in humid weather, and one grain of grit leaves a permanent scratch.

Do you need a rubber base?

Most pads have a moulded rubber underside, and most buyers assume that is the only way to stop a pad sliding. It is not. Rubber is what makes a pad 3 mm or thicker, and thick rubber is what curls at the corners after a year in a warm room.

To be fair to rubber: on a very smooth desk, a heavy rubber pad resists a hard shove a little better. If you swipe your mouse across the full width of the desk, buy the rubber one.

Which mouse pad for your laptop or desk

Wooden or laminate desk: anything works. Choose on cleaning and looks.

Glass desk: a light pad wanders and an optical mouse will not track on bare glass. Use a heavy rubber pad or a thin pad with a proper grip underside, and avoid hard plastic, which slides worst of all on glass.

Laptop on a dining table or in a cafe: a thin pad that fits in the laptop bag. A mouse pad for a laptop should go where the laptop goes, so 1.3 mm beats 4 mm.

Shared or hot desk: wipe-clean wins. A cloth pad on a shared desk shows its age within months.

Can you wash a cloth mouse pad?

A foam cloth pad can usually be hand-washed and dried flat. A thin woven fabric pad like our chambray one should be spot-cleaned with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, then left to dry flat.

Is a leather mouse pad waterproof?

Vegan leather is: a spill sits on top until you wipe it. Our Royal Blue, Slate Charcoal and Stone Grey pads are vegan leather. Genuine leather is not waterproof and can stain.

Is a hard mouse pad better than a cloth one?

Only if you want the fastest possible glide. A hard mouse pad is louder, wears down your mouse feet and scratches easily. Cloth or vegan leather suits office and home work better.

How thick should a mouse pad be?

For office work, thin is better: 1 to 2 mm sits flat under your forearm and travels in a laptop bag. Thick 3 to 5 mm foam pads suit gaming on a big desk.
