How to Clean a Phone Case: Clear, Silicone, Leather & Denim

For most phone cases, a little mild soap, warm water and a soft cloth is all you need. The trick is matching the method to the material, because a clear case, a silicone one, and a leather or denim cover each want slightly different handling, and a couple of common shortcuts (bleach, alcohol, the washing machine) will wreck them. How to clean a clear or silicone case

These pick up grime in the corners and along the edges, and clear ones tend to yellow over time.

1. Take the case off the phone. Never clean it with the phone still inside.
2. Mix a few drops of mild soap into warm water and dip the cloth or a soft toothbrush.
3. Gently scrub inside and out, working the corners and the camera cut-out.
4. Rinse under a light stream of water, shake off, and pat dry.
5. Air-dry fully for a few hours before putting the phone back. Trapped moisture is the enemy.

Yellowing on a clear case is usually oxidation from UV light and skin oils. A paste of baking soda and water, scrubbed gently then rinsed, lightens it. Be honest with yourself, though: deep yellowing on a cheap TPU case is often permanent, and at that point a fresh case is the real fix.

How to clean a hard plastic case

Polycarbonate is the easiest. Wipe it with a cloth dampened in mild soapy water, get into the cut-outs with a toothbrush, then dry it fully. Skip abrasive scrubbers, which leave micro-scratches that dull the finish.

How to clean a leather or vegan-leather case

Leather and vegan leather (like the tan trim on our covers) do not like water sitting on them.

1. Wipe with a cloth that's barely damp, not wet, moving with the grain rather than in circles.
2. For a mark, add the tiniest bit of mild soap, wipe, then go over it again with a clean damp cloth.
3. Dry with a soft towel and let it air-dry away from heat and direct sun.
4. Once in a while, a small amount of leather conditioner keeps it supple and stops it cracking.

Never use alcohol, sanitiser wipes or harsh cleaners on leather, which strip the finish and dry it out.

How to clean a denim or fabric flip cover

A denim flip cover (like ours) is woven fabric over a frame, finished with a tan leather trim, so treat it as a mix of the two.

1. Brush off loose dust first.
2. Spot-clean marks with a cloth dipped in mild soapy water. Dab, don't soak. Work gently so the weave doesn't fray.
3. Wipe the tan leather trim separately with a barely-damp cloth, following the leather steps above.
4. Press out moisture with a dry towel and air-dry flat, in the shade.

Do not machine-wash or soak a flip cover. It has a rigid inner tray and a magnetic strip; soaking warps the frame and can weaken the glue. Spot-cleaning keeps the denim looking new for far longer. How often should you clean it?

A quick wipe once a week keeps oils and dust from building up; a proper clean once a month is plenty for most people. If you cook, travel or work outdoors, do it more often, since grime that sits in the seams is what ages a case fastest.
