The short answer
A good farewell gift for a colleague is something they will use at the next job: a round mouse pad (₹499), a steel bottle, a good pen, a desk plant or a notebook. If ten or more people each put in ₹100 to ₹300, the pool of ₹1,000 to ₹3,000 buys one proper shared gift, like earbuds or a backpack.
The best farewell gift for colleague, friend or manager is something they will use at the next job from the first week: a mouse pad for the new desk, a steel water bottle, a good pen, a small desk plant or a wallet flip cover for their phone. If the whole team chips in, a pool of ₹1,000 to ₹3,000 buys one proper gift, and one proper gift usually gets kept longer than ten small ones.
Below are ideas by budget, a table for working out a team pool, a quick way to choose if you hardly know the person, and lines for the card. A few of the ideas are things we make in Delhi, and they are marked.
How much should the team spend?
A lot of teams collect the money in the office WhatsApp group. ₹100 to ₹300 a person is a common range for a colleague, and a bit more for a manager. Multiply it out before you shop, and keep a little aside for wrapping:

Farewell gift for colleague under ₹500
For when it is just you, or a small team.
Made by us · anyone
A round leather mouse pad
₹499
A new office hands out a laptop and a chair, and a mouse pad is usually missing from the list. Ours is 23 cm across, waterproof vegan leather in Royal Blue, Slate Charcoal or Stone Grey, and it wipes clean if tea spills.
Anyone
A small desk plant
about ₹350
A money plant or a snake plant in a ceramic pot. Both cope with low office light and with someone who forgets to water them for a week.
Anyone
A good metal pen
about ₹300
One heavy pen feels like a gift. A pack of ten feels like stationery. Their joining forms will need a signature anyway.
Anyone
A coffee mug with a lid
about ₹400
The lid keeps tea warm through a long meeting. A plain mug gets used for years; a printed "We will miss you" mug tends to stay in the cupboard.

Senior colleague or boss
A desk set for the new cabin
about ₹2,500
A pen stand, a card holder and a mouse pad in matching colours. Formal enough for a manager, and all three get used.
Farewell gift for male colleague or female colleague
How someone works tells you more than whether they are a man or a woman. Tap the line that sounds like them:
They spend the day on calls
Wireless earbuds if the team is pooling. Alone, a mug with a lid and a good pen for notes during calls.
They sit at a desk all day
A round mouse pad, a desk plant and a steel bottle. Any one of these works on its own, and all three come in under ₹1,600.
They are always on the road
A laptop backpack, or a wallet flip cover so the phone, ID card and cash travel together.
You hardly know them
Keep it simple: a mouse pad, a metal pen or a plant. Nothing personal, nothing that needs a size, and all of them get used.
A farewell gift for boss or manager is better coming from the whole team, and better kept formal: the desk set, a good pen or the framed photo. A personal gift from one person to a manager can feel awkward in a small office.
What to write in a farewell card
Keep it short and specific. One real memory says more than a page of good wishes. A few lines you can borrow:
For the card
"The Monday reviews will be quieter without you. All the best at the new place."
"Thank you for covering for me in March. I still owe you a chai."
"Half this team learnt the billing software from you. Expect calls."
"Go well, keep in touch, and keep the tea off the mouse pad."
